Microstructure and mechanical properties of a TiB2-modified Al–Cu alloy processed by laser powder-bed fusion

In this work, crack-free samples with a relative density of 99.5 ± 0.1% were produced from gas-atomized Al–Cu–Ag–Mg–Ti–TiB2 powder via laser powder-bed fusion. The homogeneous equiaxed microstructure without preferred grain orientation shows the ?-Al grains’ mean size to be 0.64 ?m 0.26 TiB2 particles sizes several tens nm up 1.5 observed in as-built component. Small approx. 200 are located within grains, which show semi-coherent interface phase. Larger accumulate liquid between growing grains during solidification and inhibit growth. Al2Cu phase is precipitated at boundaries. Coarse precipitates, slightly enriched silver magnesium, also preferentially on small pores particles. novel fine-grained results state tensile strength 401 2 MPa total elongation fracture 17.7 0.8%.
